Marielle Mac Leman, Artspace Artist
Solo Show at University Art Gallery, Quadrangle, NUI Galway
14th – 27th June 2012
The Fall then Rise of Sleeping Finch recalls historical museum keepers and collectors who, suffering insanity or incompetence, made obstacle courses of taxidermy, destroyed entire specimen groups through disapproval or embellished others in gold for aesthetic improvement. Marielle MacLeman presents a selection of work from her residency at The Zoology and Marine Biology Museum as the fanatical, furtive creations of Albert Finch Esq. as he attempts to recreate pieces that fell foul of his museum predecessors.Where a cabinet of curiosity could raise social prestige in the 18th c., these are the discovered remnants of a private dwelling. Finch is an avid hobbyist, revivalist and recycler – named after an unfortunate Goldfinch that committed suicide on the Artist’s window shortly after she moved to Galway.
The residency has been generously supported by an Arts Council Bursary Award, a Galway City Council Individual Creative Artist Award and the knowledge and enthusiasm of staff in the departments of Zoology and Earth and Ocean Sciences.
